Twisted Disco - The Darker Side Of Kandi

In 2003 Hed Kandi unveiled a side to its personality that until then had been dormant and largely unconsidered both by fans and label alike. It’s no secret that the label is firmly rooted in the soulful, funky genre of House Music with laid back ‘Chilled’ titles becoming extremely popular from very early on. As we moved from 2000 towards the mid 00’s however, House Music and club nights alike, started to show more and more of a penchant for darker side of dance music, the dirty electro sound and the possibilities it presented became more and more popular. Just look where we are today. Producers are constantly pushing what we expect them to do to the very limits and the control one of today’s well crafted tech house tracks can have over a crowd is often astonishing. Inspired risk and forward thinking are what creativity and success are born from. House Music its self would not exist without this expression and experimentation.
It is no surprise then, that a sound that was so popular was to be explored by such a popular label, it was time to hold house music down and tickle it till it pee’d and 2003 kicked off with Hed Kandi’s first adventure into the darker side of House Music namely - Twisted Disco. Dark and dirty yet still groovy and deep it welcomed tracks onto the compilation from artists including DJ Gregory, Who Da Funk and Dirty Vegas. Some welcomed this new adventure with open arms whilst others were more sceptical, 6 years on however and the twisted genre has become a revered release in the Hed Kandi calendar. Hed Kandi’s bad boy persona but still with loads of the quintessential grooving sound the label is renowned for, ‘Twisted’ strikes a perfect balance whilst representing the forward thinking side of the label. Today, the twisted title allows the label to fully defect from the norm and rare remixes constantly step into the limelight.
What is evident looking back over the Twisted journey to today is that Hed Kandi was rubbing shoulders very early on with the heavyweights of today’s Electro and Tech communities, a retrospective of some of the Twisted theme’s high points speaks for itself. Below we have compiled some of our favourites here at HK, a task which was a great deal of fun may we add! So why not become a YouTube DJ for an hour and stretch your sound system’s legs with the following:

Twisted Disco 2004

The Paddle (12” Mix) - A great example of main room thumping tech. This is an earlier release from DJ Touché, now a festival favourite under the moniker ‘Fake Blood’.

Twisted Disco 2005

Alter Ego - Rocker [Eric Prydz Mix] – A stunning track with a seriously juicy saw-synth, this frequently claws its way back into many a DJs box.

Twisted Disco 2005

Spektrum – Kinda New - This track has made two appearances on twisted, this dub from Tiefschwarz is awesome. Now the hottest property in Deep / Tech House and with a penchant for some seriously colourful Techno, Tiefschwarz’ set at the Space closing party was without a doubt a 2009 Ibiza high point. Early remixes like this are a must have in your collection and the signature wonky vocals on this record are very nice indeed.

Twisted Disco 2006

Wonderland Avenue – White Horse – A driving peak time track with a fantastically quirky vocal, this is fantastic deep electro house.

Twisted Disco 2006

Tribulation - LCD Soundsystem (Tiga mix) – Tracks like this are perfectly at home on Twisted, It has an acid feel with a superb vocal that brings it right into the Twisted Disco remit.

Twisted Disco 2007

M.A.N.D.Y. vs. Booka Shade - Body Language (Tocadisco Remix) – Needn’t waste any time quoting the production credits of these two. A seriously good track with an infectious melody line that sets dance floors on fire.

Twisted Disco 2008

Stanton Warriors - Shake it up (Hook N Sling Remix) – A really tough electro track with a laidback lyric from breaks royalty the Stanton Warriors. This Hook N Sling Remix makes the four to the floor really work.

Twisted Disco 2009

ATFC Feat. Lisa Millett - Bad Habit (ATFC's Lektrotek Re-Visit) – A brilliant producer, this is one of ATFCs’ strongest tracks and his own Lectrotek Re-Visit is what Twisted Disco is all about!
In case you haven’t guessed, the darker side of Kandi is about to break curfew once again but rest assured the next release takes this genre to the next level! Keep your ears to the ground for early November, you’re in for a real treat.
