In dedication to the late great Charles Cooper of Telefon Tel Aviv, the MUTEK podcast series opens with a look back to the early days of the dynamic duo, captured here in fine form at the Musée Juste Pour Rire in Montreal, on May 28, 2003.
Telefon Tel Aviv got their start in New Orleans and by 2001 had moved to Chicago and started releasing material via  the Hefty  label.  By the time they were invited to MUTEK in 2003, they had an impressive debut album - Fahrenheit Fair Enough - under their belts and were just beginning to build the loyal international following they enjoyed at the time Cooper suddenly died earlier this year, at the age of 31, on the eve of the release of their third album, Immolate Yourself .
But back at this Nocturne showcase on a hot Thursday night, the duo, who were just then playing their first shows outside the US, had landed an enviable spot opening a night that included ~scape artists Deadbeat and Pole , who was here appearing with rapper Fat Jon.  As this 37-minute recording revelas, even early on Telefon Tel Aviv were masters of weaving hypnotic breakbeats through a range of atmopsheric strings and electronics, an appeal that would garner many claims that they were ready to evolve the "intelligent" sounds of British IDM more commonly found on British labels like Warp and Skam.
Telefon Tel Aviv were capable of delivering tooughened but altogether more poetic Americanized perspective on that sound, one that had just as much in common with Plaid and Autechre as it did with upcoming contemporaries on the more emotive Ghostly International label in Michigan or the more hip-hop hued Hefty imprint from their base of Chicago.
And so we start off the MUTEKLIVE series by looking back to 2003 and tipping our hats to Telefon Tel Aviv's many accompolishments.
