It seems that the European metropolis of bohemia and decadence is losing more and more of its flair. Both In The Mix, French newspaper Le Monde and The New York Times have all reported that France’s capital, Paris, is facing nightlife extinction if something isn’t done soon. “2009 was a very depressing year for Parisian clubbers,” mentions French nightlife enthusiast Claire Cavallini. Smoking bans, harsh policing and consistent complaints by surrounding neighbours are putting the kybosh on Parisian clubbing life. But a pro-nightlife petition is being laid out, which so far has accumulated over 14,000 signatures hoping to restore the balance in Paris’s nightlife. Organized by promoters Technopol, they are protesting against new laws crippling clubs such as the 2008 tobacco ban, which have sent many revelers out onto the streets, subsequently causing noise complaints. “They think they are cleaning up the city but they’re actually killing its soul,” says Paris-based techno producer Master-H. Cavallini and many others protest that the ridiculous price of drinks have also crippled the quality of nightlife: “Why would I go out paying € 15 for my drinks when I can smoke and drink cheaply with my friends at my house, and listen to some of my favorites tunes on Spotify or Deezer?” In the end this critical petition might be able to balance the scales, but for now Sarkozy’s iron grip on Paris’s nightlife looks set to remain.
