Party Guide: Italy
27 January 2009

In perspective, Italy's contribution to arts and music has been immense and it was proudly one of the leading European countries to embrace electronic sounds.
For our World Dance Music Capital series, we found it almost impossible to pick out just one location from 'The Boot', so instead we've decided to cover the whole country. In recent years, the predominating sound in Italy has been, without question, minimal techno and all major cities now have some forum for showcasing all the heavyweight players at the forefront of that sound.
Pierfrancesco Pacoda, Editor of Hot Contemporary Magazine, advises people visiting Italy for clubbing to "find the unusual venues outside the main club circuit, the place we call 'centri sociali', often big warehouses squatted by young people, where you can listen to the best in techno, dub, and other sounds in the most friendly atmosphere you can imagine."
Luca Piccolo from Orbeat, Italy's most high profile booking agency, explains, "At the moment it [the Italian scene] is very crazy. When I started there were just a few promoters in Italy interested into electronic techno music. Napoli was one of the most important cities for techno music in the 90's. But since this sound became 'popular' every commercial house music promoter tried to jump onto it and in the past 2 years many of them have lost a lot of money." So here in no particular order is our clubbing guide to Italy, with a selection of the most well known clubs, underground picks and happening cities.
