Artist of the week...

Evan Rhodes can be described by one word: Pioneering. Coming from a musical background in the northern suburbs of Detroit, he picked up a guitar at an early age. From there he learned the keys, and soon after, discovered the art of DJing. What sets him apart from the pack is the way he incorporates all these things together to give him his unique and signature sound. He has taken DJing and moved it up a notch by adding a smooth blend of live guitar and synthesizers, over glitchy, funky house music.
Evan landed his first residency in 1998 at the Velvet Lounge, home to such world renowned greats as Terrance Parker and DJ Godfather. It was here that he polished his skills as a DJ and learned what it meant to be in control of a crowd. Since then, his skills have brought him everywhere from Chicago, to New York,Toronto and San Francisco showing people what the energy of a Detroit-bred artist is all about.
Evans Production work landed him a write-up in Billboard magazine and a nomination for a Detroit Music Award. His music is currently being played by the biggest names in house music including Mark Farina, Jason Hodges, DJ Mes, Hector Moralez, and Scud Bloom to name a few. Look for releases on Photo Recordings, Bumpshop Music, Allhousemusic, Motion Music, Bid Muzik, and Bassmint Recordings in the future.
So keep an eye on this self-taught multi-instrumentalist as he is poised to take the electronic music world by storm.
"Street Sweepa EP" is a perfect example of Evan's style. The title track is indeed truly funked-up house music with a glitchy edge, and its backed up by an equally (dare we say more so) funky number, courtesy of Midway Stranger on remix duty. Infectious bass and cheeky brass alert... We're lovin it! 

Label of the week...

Nice & Nasty celebrate 15 years in the music biz in 2009. The label was born in Belfast but now lives in Dublin, like its owner Desy Balmer. Nice & Nasty has been a catalyst for many aspiring Irish DJs and Artists, often acting as a platform for local talent to launch from. Desy set up Nice & Nasty with Robbie Nelson (Agnelli & Nelson) and Billy Dunseath (Planet Love promoter) many moons ago; however, after diverse releases by Ubiquity, Teknik, Yellow Pencil and McCartney & Stewart, Desy didn't fancy the linear direction his partners followed and parted ways with the aim to foster new Irish artists and bring some interesting and challenging music to Irish shores. Sporadic releases from Dave Ingham, Derek Carr, Ron's Mobile Disco, Spectrum is Green and an association with Fabrice Lig and Arne Weinberg fuelled Desy's love of classic Detroit techno with his split passion for hard acid house and disco-filtered funk.
Today Nice & Nasty's roster fly's beyond Belfast and Dublin and has a true international flavour. From Japan there are Tomi Chair, Katsuhiko and Itokim; From Sweden there are Kenny Black, Thoverstam, Andres Cabrera and ex-pat Mark O'Sullivan; From USA there is Detroit pioneer Terrence Dixon and Dutch maestro Orlando Voorn; From Scotland there is Marco Bernardi (Octogen); From Italy Obtane; From France Catalepsia; From Austria Mike Absolom and Martin Mueller; From Canada Tomas Jirku; and from the UK there are Dave Ingham, Teknik, Matt Chester, Nasty Bobby and Marco Bernardi. From this group of artists think of respected labels Fine Art, Soma, 11th Hour, Nightvision, Force Inc, Finest Blend, DK7, Delsin and more and you find the label associations Nice & Nasty has forged. Plus then there are the friends and remixers that include Fabrice Lig, Paul Mac, Q-Burns Abstract message, Alex Smoke, Dan Curtin, Aruba and CJ Bolland.
The Irish regiment is arguably the elite of Irish electronica - Chymera, Rob Glennon, Feno, Tr-One, Derek Carr, The Parallel, Vakama, T-Polar, Mick Chillage thatboytim, Celtec Twinz, Sourcecode and Brian Taaffe plus Desy of course, who records as Heretics of Disko, Primus Inter Pares and Remlab. It is not essential to be Irish to record for Nice & Nasty but it helps!
Rob GLennon goes beyond the pale of his Static imprint to work with Desy Balmer and Nice & Nasty forging a new Irish techno scene based on cooperation and collaboration. The Night Freaks EP features four brand new trax from Rob Glennon and will be followed by a double pack of remixes of Ratio and Bass Shifter by Ireland's and the worlds finer remixers. The Nightfreaks is a fusion of dance floor stomping 4-to-the-floor and melody infused chill out vibes.
