V-Moda Crossfade LP Custom Headphones Giveaway

EKS Otus
30 January 2008

Finnish company EKS saw the technology and aesthetics lines drawn in the sand by the likes of Numark's NS7 and Stanton's SC system and jumped right over it, laughing and mocking their now old fashioned efforts. To be introduced at MusikMesse in march, EKS OTUS will bring fresh thinking to controlling DJ software. With new features, solid aluminium build and cool design it will give professional DJs a serious tool for the future.Behold the power of EKS's Otus.

So let's take a look at what the Otus has to offer. The first and very obvious thing is the space age styling. Usually such products are associated with Apple fanboys speculating about what crazy ideas are coming out of the Apple lab, but never quite end up looking like the render. But the Otus does - the final product (at this point anyway) looks like the render. Check this movie to see it.

I love the idea of such a giant leap into the future and give EKS a massive pat on the back. I'm left wondering what mixer wouldn't look like an antique between a pair of these though. A Numark DXMPro with its black and red stylings would look cool though, or perhaps a Lemur with its touch screen goodness.

The touch controls are an interesting idea and one that people have speculated about for a while. While the entirely digital DJ does all their work on screen, they still wanted a touch feely hands on experience, hence the rise of the physical controller. The Otus aims to give DJs that conventional deck feel but in many ways lacking the physical feel of controls. I wonder how DJs will feel about touch screen DJing? We do like to feel that physical click and know that a button has been pressed. I guess some time spent with the Otus at Messe will give me more insight into how this works and feels.

I do have a full spec sheet for this but being so revolutionary, EKS are still finalising this and will release the details closer to launch, but I'm sure you can glean enough excitement from the text above to see that the EKS Otus is a serious piece of nextlevelness like no other right now. The only info we have on release and price is that they're showing it properly at MusikMesse in March. So don't ask, and it really wouldn't be funny if you did anyway.

Keep watching EKS for more info in the coming months on the Otus.
