I created Mistakes Music 3 years ago now, to release on my own platform and to have full control of my music. It was vital for me to release what I want when I wanted. And about the name, Mistakes - the way i'm doing it is sort of random - I have no rules, i just follow my instinct, let the things happen, and make lots of happy accident that result in something I wouldnt have done if I had done it on purpose - those mistakes make my sound signature. Where do you see the future of the label? We are developing the label to another level, at first it was only for my own stuff, but now we slowly open the doors to producers from 'outside'. We have some solid group of artists now on the label such as Format:B, Secret Cinema & Ramon Tapia, Reset Robot, Uto Karem, Popof, Lutzenkirchen... and its just the beginning ! We have lots more releases coming soon. We are now developing label nights around the globe with the artists from the label, such as this Saturday at Ministry :) we sold out our first night in Amsterdam and Its going really well and in the direction I wanted, so i'm very pleased. Talk to us a little bit about your road to DJ stardom? Oh thats a very very long story, i'll try to make it short :) - I started djing back in 1993, my heroes at that time where more US garage and Chicago House DJs and producers. One night i went to a club (playing very commercial music from the radio), i was 14 (and not even allowed to go in a club at that age... anyway) - and i was just shocked by the power of loud music and the lights, so I became very addicted to going out and naturally as i was already mixing in my bedroom, I wanted to be a DJ. A few years later, in 1997 i bought my first sampler and start producing my own stuff and released my first record 6 months later. From there everything became one. But to be honest it took me a while to find my own sound, experience is so important, but i always been into the funky side of music. Now I feel i'm in the scene since forever but also feel sometimes that i'm just at the beginning. What advice would you give other up and coming DJ’s? Stop following the hype, follow your heart, be very patient, and work hard. There are so many DJs these days, so if you wanna break through, be ambitious, creative and different. Anyway, the real talented people will be noticed one day, and the fakes who do it for the fashion will not make it. Don't see the DJ life style as a dream, see it as a real hard job you have to do with passion. It does look cool on the paper but most of the time its FAR from being easy once you are in! Are there any other artists that are killing it for you right now? Yes, as a DJ i think Marco Carola is doing really well, always been a fan of his techno, even years ago when it was much more harder than it is now. Still I prefer the sound of today. Production wise there is so many, but most of the time, some of these arent that constant - they make good records for 6 months, but after repeating themselves, people get bored quickly. So some very constant people like Format:B are great, its techno but its different than the others, its simply called the sound signature. Talk to us about Superflu and Format b? Well you know now what I think about Format:B, so Super Flu are these two crazy German guys, their sound is also very special and different, mixing techno and weird/funny funky things in their music. They are very original, super funky and very dancefloor. I suggest you watch one of their own video clips as well, they are hilarious :) What plans do you have over this summer? The summer is always a big mess, with much more gigs than normal. I'm off to Asia next week for a 2 week tour, and will play 4 gigs in Ibiza at Space, and of course some festivals such as Creamfields. Check my diary on myspace.com/sebastienleger for more details. What current residencies do you have over the world? I don't have any, I play from clubs to festivals, festivals to clubs, I'm more a resident in airports Can we expect any productions or EP’s coming out from you over the next couple of months? Yes of course, I never stop making music, I just finished 2 tracks yesterday, and I probably have 10 ready to be out. The most difficult part is to choose wich one will be out or not. Sometimes I wish I could release them all in one time, but then 2 months later, I would have to do the same again, I have toooo many tracks, which is good for my live show which is now ready too. What do you think it is that makes you appeal as an artist? Hopefully having my own sound, and doing this because I like this music more than anything. I'm a true house/techno music believer since i was 10. So true that sometimes the business side of this makes me sick, and that makes me an artist more than a business man.... You have not played at Ministry for quite a while now, what are you most looking forward to? The sound system !!!!! For a dj, playing in that booth its like being a fish in the sea. I feels amazing, every tracks sounds incredible, even a shit produced record will sound good there. I feel at home in that booth, and of course the line up is exactly what i like, funky techno with nice guys ! Perfect! So what we expect to hear from you this weekend? All my new unreleased tracks, some of my freshly out stuff too of course, but the music policy is clearly funky dancefloor techno. Anything else you want to talk about? The usual links to follow me on all this ridiculous social stuff that help to promote :) ![]() Related Content:
