Nowtrax Exclusive Interview: Supernova Speak About Their Spat With Kevin Saunderson

A couple of weeks ago, Detroit legend Kevin Saunderson posted a bitter statement about ‘illegal sampling’ on his website. The target of his fury? Italian producers Supernova, and their hit track ‘Beat Me Back’ to be specific.

He made their track available on Soundcloud as a free download and made it clear how unhappy he was with the fact his 1987 classic ‘The Sound’ had probably been sampled. However it since became known that was not the intention of the Supernova guys, who play for Nowtrax in Miami on March 25th.

We thought it was time to give Supernova a chance to tell their side to the story, a saga that now has a happy ending and an exciting future…

Nowtrax: How did the recent misunderstanding with Kevin Saunderson take place?

Supernova: “Six months ago, after a gig in Milan we came back to the studio to create something new. We began listening to sounds from an old school sample library we thought was all cleared and free. We found a loop that we really loved in the library and tried to play it over giving it a different BPM and adding similar sounds on top to create something special. We loved the way it was matching with our groove and kept on arranging the track with our style.

“We called it ‘Beat Me Back’ and kept this track in our hard drive for five months as we thought it wasn’t a potential hit. Then Rob Mirage, owner of Nirvana Recordings, wanted a track from us for a compilation that he had planned to release right before New Year so we gave it to him. He loved it and took it.

“The track soon had worldwide acclaim and climbed to No.1 on the download charts. It was also included in many big artist charts. In a short time ‘Beat Me Back’ became one of the most played tracks in the world.

“Two months from the release date and when the track was charted at number 1 for 7 weeks, we were informed of Kevin Saunderson’s attack on his website from some friends who contacted us right away. We were very surprised by his letter because we were in good faith and didn’t know his 23 year old track ‘The Sound’. We were also disappointed because no one had contacted us or Nirvana earlier to inform us of the issue and give us a chance to resolve it peacefully. These things happen very often in this industry and it is normal that it is resolved very easily with a simple email or phone call.

Kevin was obviously very passionate about his track, so have you managed to resolve things with him now?

“Yes, we have definitely resolved things with Kevin and could not be happier with the outcome. Both sides are in complete agreement and Kevin is now in our good faith. He understands the quality of the Supernova project and the potential of ‘Beat Me Back’. He has even contacted us to say sorry about his attack, which was a great relief for us. He explained to us that he had to do this because he was so upset that his music, mostly this track, had been sampled many times by countless artists.

“With us being in contact, now there is mutual respect and we have also decided to collaborate in the near future on new projects together. Rob and Nirvana have done an amazing job to resolve this issue and find a fast solution with Kevin. The label has really stood by our side and helped us in every way. It is really very hard to resolve these kind of things from across the world.

“We are so happy to say that with his help, ‘Beat Me Back’ now has a new life and will be released again on Nirvana with a brand new mix from us titled: Supernova feat. Kevin Saunderson ‘Beat Me Back’. We all really believe that this was a great way to show the world that we have joined forces on this project and everyone involved is happy with the solution. We all have a great respect for one another now and will definitely be collaborating in the future.”

How do you feel your reputation has come out of the whole episode?

From the first day this issue came out, all the big labels and the most respected DJs and A&R have contacted us in our favour. By now many people know the way we work, our reliability and our quality as artists. We are people who work hard, with passion every day and always put out top quality and research, trying to create something different, the Supernova style.

“The discography, the clubs and the music are not based on forum gossip but more by the quality of the music. Since this our reputation has improved even more. We have more requests and opportunities than ever before. People now are not only appreciating our music and commitment but also the professional way that we deal with these kind of problems.

“Mostly though, now we have a new friend; Mr Kevin Saunderson.”
