1. How did you choose the producers for "More Things" .All we basically did was choose a few songs from my last album titled 'those things'and had some various remixes done. These are the unreleased remixes we have been sitting on for a couple years now that didn't make it on the 'those things remixed' album, so we decided to finally release them.... over all the feeling is very laid back with an old school house vibe, rather than trying to be overly current or trendy with the sound and style... just simply keeping it soulful and enjoyable to listen to as well as having a nice groove. Although there is a couple remixes on there that have plenty of energy and movement, I enjoy focusing on writing songs that are not necessarily meant for just the dj's or dance floor. All the artists involved with the remixes gave it their own take and vibe.{youtube}3ygUMNqY99o{/youtube}
2. How did you hook up with the reggae legend Junior Reid on the "Fire" single?I've been a fan of Junior Reid since I was a kid and my good friend plays bass in his band, so when they were in town touring he agreed to come in the studio with me to write a song together and record vocals. So we did it sort of spontaneously and on the fly. Then I spent quite a bit of time editing the random vocal takes and sort of cut them all up to create the final version since Junior had taken off back to Jamaica.4. House Music this year… What are your predictions?I don't have a crystal ball unfortunately. But I just try and stay true to what im feelin while also experimenting with new sounds. But I don't really follow the trends or the sound of the moment. Fashion, like music trends come and go but good music and quality songwriting stand the tests of time. Although what's 'good' is a very subjective statement, all we can and should do is what we feel and that's true creative artistic expression. I wouldn't do music if it wasn't my passion, so I just do what I love.... creatively I enjoy trying new things and as a producer I have always been very diverse in my sound. I think that's because I stay open minded with music in general and listen to all different styles and genres. But as far as electronic dance music goes, I love the deep and soulful side of the spectrum. I feel a lot of support from people who are inspired by the music all over the world and that definitely helps keep me going. So I hope more producers continue to keep the deep soulful sound alive for the next generation as we need more soul in this world.5. Any plans on more tours with the Petalpusher band coming up?Absolutely, but I'm taking a little break right now and reorganizing some things... it gets crazy working on so many projects at once. there is only so many hours in the day to run my label salted music, tour full time all over the world as a dj, rehearse and play with my band, produce, write and record music, and everything else in life. It's hard to find balance sometimes but I love it.6. You've worked with Lisa Shaw quite a bit and are releasing her upcoming artist album on Salted…how did this relationship begin?I've been working with Lisa for over 10 years now and we are like family. We creatively vibe together very well so it's easy to work with someone when you are both on the same page and it's a pleasure working with her. I'm excited to release the new album and think that electronic music desperately needs artists like Lisa who stay true to their passion with integrity. It's a rare thing these days but it shows in the music and vibe.7. What can we expect from Salted Music this year?Besides Lisa Shaw's new album coming out in march, im going to be doing a new mix comp. as well as releasing a plethora of quality singles by a wide range of artists including Joshua Heath, Random Soul, Nathan G, Justin Michael, Dutchican Soul, and many more....8. Will there be a Salted Music party at this year WMC?Of course! We are doing 2 events this year. One on Friday night march 27th (which we are currently in the process of finalizing), and one on sat. March 28th which is a daytime event at Nikki Beach.....people can check out the listings and event details at saltedmusic.com or the WMC list.9. It seems like you've been touring the globe for years…any plans to chill in one spot for an extended period of time?I say I'm gonna take some time off touring and slow down a bit every year, but it never happens... I really want to start working on a new album though and put more energy and time into my band and label, so that's my plan for this year...10. What non dance music do you listen to these days?Actually to be quite honest I don't really listen to much dance music while hangin out and chillin at home. I have always listened to a lot of rock, soul, funk, hip-hop and reggae. From the Black Keys, Jimi Hendrix, Steely Dan, Burning Spear, Half Pint, The Stones, Prince, and everything under the sun.. the list is way to long... but I cant stop listening to the new Black Keys album, and Q-Tips new joint is nice.![]() |
