Interview: Toolroom's spotlight on Funkagenda

1) Hi Funkagenda, please tell us where you are right now and what you are doing...

Right now I am in the studio working on a few new bits + bobs for my Toolroom Knights compilation release in October. For those interested I am trying to create a half decent Ping Pong delay effect using Fabfilter's Timeless...

2) Two of your biggest hit records were released on Toolroom, “What the Fuck” & “Man With A Red Face”...what’s next in the pipeline production wise?

An album of Bagpipe Technodubcore... Its a pretty niche market to be honest, but I feel that when there is a whole you should plug it...Then again Mike Tyson thought that and look where it got him... On a slightly less rapey note, I am actually gearing up for the release of my new single Helix and the launch of my Funk Farm imprint later in the year...

3) Which DJs/artists/musicians influence your work today?

Many artists influence what I do. BT was my biggest influence while I was learning production but as it got easier to do things I got a little lazy. I didn't strive to master the digital DAW's in the same way he did and I regret that now... So I am forging ahead trying to do it now! Also I love artists like Justice for the way they mangle sounds in their work.... I think my all time fave dance album is probably Homework though... Followed by Movement In Still Life...

4) Given the choice would you prefer to be in the studio making music or on tour and why?

I love being on tour for long stretches like when I go to the States... But week in week out I would pick the studio hands down...I love being able to just sit down and CREATE, wether it is sounds, tunes, loops or whatever...

5) You are also currently in the process of mixing the new Toolroom Knights album, can you give us a little insight on what to expect?

Well I am kinda mixing the two discs as seperate entities. The second disc will be a balls out club disc, just like how I play live in the UK + Europe. It will be funky uplifting tech house with lots of tools and tricks thrown into the mix. The first disc is what I call my kinda global sound. Its gonna start MUCH deeper and be more of a progression. Ambient, Deep House, Techno all mixed up to create really moody journey!

6) You can invite 5 people alive or dead to dinner – who would they be?

John Martyn, BT, Prince, Bob Moog and Steve Jobbs...

7) If you had to pick a favourite gig to play again which one would it be?

There are so many reasons to pick so many different gigs its difficult...Recently I played in El Paso Texas. That was one of the most life affirming gigs I have ever done... About 2000 people came to see me, and they had made WTF T Shirts and everything... INSANE! Also the first time I played at Le Souk in NYC with Exacta... 5hrs B2B playing all my early stuff and loads of wicked house... That was cool! And ANY of the times Paul Thomas and I did our marathons at Godskitchen in the Nitrogen room...

8) For all the budding producers reading, tell us what your favourite bit of studio kit and why?

I have 2 and for very different reasons: Logic is number one. Nothing feels more natural for putting together tracks than this. It really is the perfect DAW... My custom TB303 is the second. It used to belong to Carl Cox and I bought it and had it reconditioned by Jeff Toman. He painted it Pearl White, put my logo on it and switched all the LEDs to blue... It owes me about £1700 now but it looks SO cool...

9) What’s your biggest fear?

This one:

FEAR :(

10) As a Toolroom Knight, what can the clubbers from you at Lush on 29th August?

Well they can expect me to work DAMN hard to make their night great... I'll die trying y'know! Musically they can expect a bit of everything... maybe some bagpipe technodubcore?
