Interview: Fedde Le Grand speaks ahead of TK5 performance
22 September 2011
Toolroom Knights 5th Birthday Party 1st October @ O2 Academy Brixton London
What have you been up to this summer?
The only thing I haven’t done is stopped. It’s been totally mental the last few months, the summer season has been probably my busiest ever, in fact I think this YEAR has been my busiest and biggest ever. I’ve also had a lot of releases over the summer – actually as far as releases go I think this has been my busiest year ever too. At the moment I’ve got So Much Love at #1 in the Beatport charts and the video has gone crazy on YouTube, we’ve had almost 350,000 hits in a week and a half, it’s a great look back at some of the highlights of the summer for me.
How did you get into music and DJing?
When I was really young I had this mobile disco with some friends when I was still in school and we used to bring all the gear and play at school parties. Then people started to ask me to play out at parties, I started going record shopping a lot more, building up my collection and settling into a musical style. I actually started off playing hip-hop but the more house I listened to and bought, the more I found that that was the style for me.
Where was your first gig and how did it go?
My first official gig was horrible actually. It was this bachelor party and the bachelor was dressed like a carrot, I don’t know why. But I didn’t mind because it was my first gig and the first time I got paid so I was happy with it.
What are your earliest memories of playing alongside Mark Knight?
That was two years ago when he invited me down to Ministry of Sound in London to be a Toolroom Knight  It was an awesome party, huge crowd and the main room was rocking.
How did your link up with Toolroom Knights come about?
I’ve always had a special relation with Toolroom. They’ve released my first ever-international track which was Just Tripping and they’ve really supported me as my career has grown. This year alone we’ve had two number 1 tracks on Beatport, Metrum and So Much Love, so we must be doing something right together 
What have been your all-time favourite Toolroom releases?
Yin from Wolfgang Gardner has always been one of my favourites and I think the remix of Man With The Red Face and You Got The Love both done by Mark Knight are absolute masterpieces. And At Night from Dave Spoon is also a favourite of mine.
Your ‘Takeover’ tour was absolutely huge this summer. Tell us where you’ve been and where you got the best reception.
I’ve been in so many places! Well Ibiza of course in Space where I also did a B2B session with Mark Knight. I’ve been almost to every European country and Turkey and Lebanon. For me there were two places that were really special, just because I hadn’t played there before and I’d really wanted to – the EXIT Festival and the Balaton Sound Festival in Hungary. EXIT was perfect, and I’m really glad because I’d heard so much hype about it so if it hadn’t lived up to it I think I’d have been really disappointed. But from start to finish, it totally blew me away, it’s so worth people taking the trip out there to go. The location is insane and just makes your jaw drop, and the music line-up is spot on. Balaton, again another festival where they just got all the ingredients right as far as what I’m looking for from a festival. Amazing crowd, the sound system was insane, it totally rocked from start to finish.
What would you say have been your top 3 career moments so far?
1. When I started my own party concept
2. When I started my own label
3. When I got 3 top 10 UK hits within a year
What are your upcoming plans?
I’m starting to put the plans together in my head for a second studio album but at the moment it’s totally up in the air and I haven’t dedicated any time to really sit down and think properly about what exactly I want to do. My diary is still rammed, and even after the summer is over, I’ve got a six day tour of America and Canada, then we’re already thinking about the Amsterdam Dance Event so I’ve got to get my business head on as well as my DJ head and make sure we make the most of the time we’ve got there. I’ve also got a tour of South America coming up in November and a North America tour in December again, which I think will be off the scale.
What can we expect from at O₂ Academy Brixton?
My new track ‘So Much Love’ just came out and I’ll be bringing that one for sure. I’ve been working on a lot of new stuff, I’m really looking forward to it and I’ve got my secret super special remix ready so you better watch out ;)
