From Little Bitchard of Kewlers blog : On the Youtube tip, a bit over a week ago the user 'shS83' posted a video where Deadmau5' track 'FML' is compared against the Kewlers demo 'Protozoa' soundtrack (aka 'Isoljator'). Not that the tunes are nowhere near one another for the most part, but if you check out the breakdown bit of 'FML' around 3:50 - 4:50 from the Tube link above, the melody starts indeed sounding awfully familiar! If Deadmau5 really copied the melodies, at least he "respectably" bothered sequencing them himself with minor changes instead of just sampling straigh from the original. FML by Deadmau5
I've contacted his label Ultra Records to hear what they have to say, but I'm still waiting for the reply. Hopefully there'll be one soon, but I doubt any label/artist would truthfully come clean under such a situation (it's from a video game you fool!). In the meanwhile, I'm left wondering how to "return the favour". I'm definitely thinking "a melody for a melody, a sample for a sample" in the best biblical / Lex Talionis spirit, but having been all over Deadmau5' releases today I'm yet to come across a single good/catchy melody I could borrow. Seems like the man knew what he was doing as he was able to anticipate my awesome plan! Nonetheless, my array of samplers is ever-so ready to rock so I guess I'll just have to take a round or two on some Deadmau5 releases. No need to worry; whatever I might come up with, I promise to make it a bit more creative than just a bar or two of sidechained four-to-the-floor ooomph! Come to think of it, I'll even host a competition around it effective from today just for the fun of it. If you think you've spotted a Deadmau5 sample on any of my releases during 2010, tell me which sound you think it is and from what tune. If you happen to be the first to spot one, I'll send you a prize of some sort! Protozoa bt Kewlers
On a final note, it seems shS83 has not been to (or studied) my site enough, since he/she describes the song to be entirely of my writing. In reality, the melodies of 'Isoljator' are a split deal between me and Mel Function. So, before posting such claims do remember to check your facts. After all, there was a reason to why the artist title for the song is 'Kewlers All-Stars' ;)
