Facebook become popular because it had a very good marketing plan, it become the rave at universities around the world, and when it went mainstream there was already so much buzz around it that it was impossible for it not to succeed.

Facebook has more than 500 million active users,[6][7][N 1] Users may create a personal profile, add other users as friends and exchange messages, including automatic notifications when they update their profile. Additionally, users may join common interest user groups, organized by workplace, school, or college, or other characteristics. The name of the service stems from the colloquial name for the book given to students at the start of the academic year by university administrations in the US with the intention of helping students to get to know each other better.

MySpace was also once a great place to go and hang out with your friends online, too. But something changed. Maybe it was the "who can have the most friends" contests that had people adding perfect strangers to their profiles, or maybe it was the spam bots that wanted to "be your friend," or maybe it was the headache-inducing profiles filled with glittery graphics and overloaded with media. Most likely, though, it was a combination of all these things and more that made an exodus from MySpace so appealing.

The use of Playlist.com on Myspace was abolished after the new Myspace music was launched. Some of the classic features of Myspace music, such as the artist directory, were also abolished.
